Longmont is a city in the US state of Colorado founded in 1871 . It is located around 50 km north of Denver on St. Vrain Creek . With a population of 86,270, the city is the fourteenth largest in the state of Colorado.
The name Longmont comes from the name of Major Stephen H. Long , who led an expedition to the area in 1820, and the French word "mont" for "mountain".
By 2016, Longmont is to become the end point of a new light rail line as part of the FasTracks project .
