Career

Alfred Hayes initially practiced judo and was the youngest British judoka to earn the black belt. He was later trained as a wrestler by Sir Athel Oakley and made his debut in 1950 in his home country as "Judo" Alfred Hayes. In the 1960s, Hayes a. a. win the British Heavyweight Title and the European version of the World Mid-Heavyweight Title . In 1971 he went to the USA, where he competed in the Amarillo League and the American Wrestling Association (AWA). In 1976 he toured Japan with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and faced Giant Baba .

In 1982 he moved to the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE ), where he had to end his active career a year later because of rheumatoid arthritis .

From 1984 to 1986, Hayes was the assistant to Vince McMahon on Tuesday Night Titans , a WWF-style talk show . Here he was mainly responsible for slapstick acts. He later made the introductory announcements in prime time wrestling . On Wrestlemania 2 he acted as a commentator along with Jesse Ventura and Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira for the Los Angeles portion of the event. As a commentator, Hayes retained his reserved quirk; although he was not exactly a heel , he rather praised actors appearing as heels, although he rejected devious methods.

After being hit by a car in 1990, he suffered gangrene and was in a wheelchair.

In 1993 he disappeared from WWF television programs and in 1995 left the organization for good. Having short term as a commentator for the American Wrestling Federation of Merced Solis had commented, he retired into private life. He died at home in Texas on July 21, 2005 at the age of 76 after a series of strokes . In the following episode of Monday Night RAW, WWE paid tribute to him with a ten-bell salute and memorial videos.

His nickname was "His Lordship" and he was often referred to as "Lord Alfred Hayes".
