Lorenz Luden (Latinized Laurentius Ludenius * 1592 in Eckernförde , Duchy of Schleswig ; † April 21 jul. / 1. May  1654 greg. In Dorpat , Livonia , now Estonia ), was professor of law, history, poetry and rhetoric and a well-known representative of neo-Latin occasional poetry at the time .

Life

Luden, son of the pastor of the same name in Weddingstedt Lorenz Luden († after 1607), enrolled in September 1610 to study at the University of Rostock and returned to Rostock in 1617 , after he also studied at the University of Greifswald and received his master's degree there where he was admitted to the Philosophical Faculty. In 1621 Lucien became at Greifswald University Doctor of Laws PhD . He worked there from 1618 to 1635 at the artist faculty as a professor of poetics and history, of mathematics and, most recently, of morality and history. In 1635 he moved to the Academia Gustaviana in Dorpat (Tartu). At the time, this university was the only university in Livonia. It emerged from the Dorpater Gymnasium founded in 1630 and was continued as Academia Gustavo-Carolina from 1690 .

In Dorpat Luden worked as a professor of rhetoric and poetry and at the same time as a professor of law. In 1649 he resigned from the first-named professorship and was also in charge of the academy's librarianship. He was elected rector three times (1636/37, 1642/43, 1652/53). Ludenius contributed significantly to establishing the reputation of the young academy in humanistic circles and to attracting students.

During his time in Greifswald, Ludenius made a name for himself as poeta laureatus Caesareus . In Dorpat, in addition to numerous disputations and treatises on subjects in his various fields, he also wrote an extensive body of a total of 223 neo-Latin poems. This collection of poems is influenced by classical and antique model authors, but also has late antique Christian models such as Venantius Fortunatus , Paulinus von Nola and reveals a particular fondness for word games and anagrams .
