Lorenzo Costa the Elder (* 1460 in Ferrara , † March 5, 1535 in Mantua ) was an Italian Renaissance painter .

Costa was a student of the painters Cosimo Tura and Francesco del Cossa in his hometown . In 1483, at the age of 23, Costa settled in Bologna as an artist . There he soon became a student and assistant to the painter Francesco Francia , from whom he was also very influenced.

Costa had a kind of rough, realistic nature in his artistic work, which even Francia could not influence. Costa soon developed his own style, but always remained in the shadow of his teachers, as he lacked the wealth of ideas from them.
