Lothar Koch (born July 1, 1935 in Velbert , † March 16, 2003 in Salzburg ) was a German oboist .

Koch studied at the Folkwang University in Essen . At first he was principal oboist of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1957 he was appointed soloist with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Herbert von Karajan . In 1961 Koch founded the Philharmonic Soloists Berlin together with other soloists from this orchestra . In the same year he began teaching at the Berlin Conservatory . In addition to chamber music and master classes , he also taught at the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, founded in 1972 . In 1978 he founded the wind ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic together with other instrumental soloists , with whom he often appeared at the Salzburg Festival . In 1990 Koch accepted a visiting professorship at the Salzburg Mozarteum , and in 1991 he was appointed full professor of oboe. Until 1996 he taught at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg . He died on March 16, 2003 as a result of a long-term illness.

Lothar Koch has undertaken worldwide concert tours as solo oboist and in chamber music ensembles and has recorded many recordings, including a. with solo concerts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Richard Strauss and Hans-Jürgen von Bose . He is considered a world-class musician, not least because of his vocal sound. He was highly valued by the Berliner Philharmoniker, especially because of his unmistakable rhythmic precision.
