Athletic career

Lothar Schulz played his first men's football games at SC Cottbus , who used him in the first team ( GDR league ) as well as in the second team ( district league ) in the 1965/66 season . During the season, the soccer section was spun off from the sports club and joined the newly founded company sports community (BSG) Energie Cottbus. Schulz played for BSG Energie in the 1966/67 and 1967/68 seasons mainly in the 2nd team, while he was only used six times in the GDR league during this period.

In May 1968 Schulz committed himself to serve in the National People's Army for five years . He was given the opportunity to continue playing football during this time and was initially stationed with the Army Sports Association Vorwärts Cottbus . There he played a total of 44 of 60 point games during the seasons 1968/69 and 1969/70 in the GDR league. For the 1970/71 season Schulz was delegated to the leadership club of the Vorwärts Army Sports Association , the upper division FC Vorwärts Berlin. He was mainly used there in the 2nd team represented in the GDR league, with which he completed 16 matches out of 26 games. In the league he was only used four times. Then he had to return to Vorwärts Cottbus, where he spent the next three seasons. Of the 66 GDR league games played during this period, Schulz played 40 games. When Vorwärts Cottbus was relegated after the 1973/74 season and was transferred to Kamenz , Schulz rejoined Energie Cottbus.

With energy he was in the season 1974/75 in the GDR league with 15 stakes in the relay relay. In the eight promotion games to the league, Schulz was used in seven encounters. The BSG rose to the league, and Schulz developed in his second league season 1975/76 with 21 stakes in points and three goals to the regular player of the Cottbusser. The league could not be held, so Schulz spent the next four seasons back in the GDR league. After a weak season in 1976/77 with only six point games, he was able to play back in 1977/78 with 20 league appearances and six goals. 1978/79 he played all 22 point games, ensured with his five goals for the renewed season victory and then played all eight promotion games, which did not lead to success. At the age of 32, Schulz started his last GDR league season in 1979. He was only used in eight games, was once again the season winner with the team and this time was used in four promotion games. Energy did not rise again and Schulz ended his career in higher-class football. He let his football career end with the lower class BSG Motor Saspow. He later appeared as a trainer for SG Eiche Branitz.
