Louis-Auguste Boileau
Louis-Auguste Boileau (born March 24, 1812 in Paris ; † February 12, 1896 ibid) was a French architect of historicism whose works are mainly committed to the neo-Gothic style.
Boileau began as a carpenter's journeyman in 1825, and in 1838 he set up his own workshop for church furniture . He worked with the architect Louis-Alexandre Piel, for whom he made church furniture. Louis-Auguste Boileau was one of the employees of the magazine L'Atelier founded by Philippe Buchez .
In 1843 he founded a wood carving school in Mirecourt in the Vosges . In 1846 Boileau built the Saint-Pierre-Fourier basilica in Mattaincourt , which was completed in 1856. In Paris he built the church of St-Eugène-Ste-Cécile in 1854/55 and in 1858/60 he was entrusted by the Pharmacie Centrale de France with the renovation of the Hôtel d'Aumont in Rue de Jouy.
Louis-Auguste Boileau was one of the first architects to use iron structures in church buildings. He wrote a book about the use of iron in architecture. He was a great admirer of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc , who in turn criticized him heavily.
In 1876 he worked with Gustave Eiffel at the Parisian department store Le Bon Marché , the first modern iron and glass department store .
His son Louis-Charles Boileau (1837-1914) and his grandson Louis-Hippolyte Boileau (1878-1948) also worked as architects.
