Louis Édouard Bouët-Willaumez (born April 24, 1808 , † September 9, 1871 in Maisons-Laffitte near Paris ) was a French admiral .

In 1838 Bouet was commissioned as a lieutenant to investigate and measure the west coast of Africa . He reported on this in the Description nautique des côtes comprises entre le Sénégal et l'équateur (Paris 1849).

Between 1842 and 1844 he was governor of the French colonies in Senegal and returned to France in 1844 , where he was appointed ship's captain and took part in the capture of Mogador . From 1848 to 1850 he was back in West Africa. In 1854 Bouet-Willaumez was appointed Rear Admiral and took part in the Crimean War as Chief of the General Staff . There he worked out the plan for the landing and bombing of the Sevastopol fortress . In 1860 he was promoted to vice admiral and in 1865 to admiral and appointed senator .

In 1859 he commanded the attack squadron off Venice . When the Franco-German War broke out , Bouet-Willaumez received supreme command of the squadron sent to the Baltic Sea and embarked on the flagship Surveillante . A landing did not take place because the landing corps in France itself was urgently needed. Also, the fleet could not do anything later due to the lack of small ships.

Louis Edouard Count Bouet-Willaumez died on September 9, 1871 in Maisons-Laffitte near Paris.

Both in Abidjan , the capital of Ivory Coast , Port-Bouët, a district is named after him, as well as Mont-Bouët in Libreville , the capital of Gabon .
