Ludwig Kolb 1806–1875

Jakob Ludwig Kolb , also Louis Kolb , (born January 9, 1806 in Aachen , † October 24, 1875 in Esslingen am Neckar ) was a German judicial councilor in Rottenburg am Neckar and draftsman .

Origin and life

Kolb, baptized as a Protestant Jakob Ludwig Kolb , later usually called himself Louis for short. He was born in Aachen on January 9, 1806. His father, Johann Gottfried Kolb (1772–1835), ran a cloth factory in the neighboring Kornelimünster in the rooms of the abolished imperial abbey. Kolb's great uncle, Jakob Friedrich Kolb (* 1748 in Göppingen , † May 16, 1813 in Kornelimünster), was a cloth merchant and first mayor of Aachen. In 1807 he bought the canceled imperial abbey Kornelimünster for 45,000 francs and set up a cloth manufacture there, which was continued by his nephew Johann Gottfried Kolb.

The Kolb family came from the Swabian region: The father Johann Gottfried Kolbs was the pastor Eberhard David Kolb in Freudenstein near Maulbronn and his mother Christiane Friederike Schmidt. The cloth manufacture went badly, which prompted Johann Gottfried Kolb to return to his father's further homeland in order to acquire the factory of the manufacturer Wilhelm August Duncker in Salach near Göppingen, who had died a few years earlier. The tobacco mill, founded in 1768, was converted into a cotton mill in 1813 and developed under Kolb and his partner Leonhardt Schachenmayr, who joined in 1824, into what is now known as the worsted yarn mill Schachenmayr, Mann & Cie.

The father, Johann Gottfried Kolb, had married Juliane Maria Coelln, daughter of an Aachen pharmacist. Between 1798 and 1820, three boys and six girls were born to the couple. The second oldest daughter married the tape manufacturer Christian Friedrich Schwarz. The eldest son, Carl Bernhard (1800–1868), became a merchant and banker in Rome, later also served as the Württemberg consul and was raised to the Württemberg staff nobility. The youngest son, Friedrich Joseph (1820–1889), became a Protestant pastor.

Ludwig Kolb was therefore the second son. Since Ludwig intended to study, his father sent him to the Preceptor Kümmerle in Möckmühl for four and a half years , and then from around 1816 to attend the grammar school in Aachen. After his father moved to Württemberg in 1822, he went to the Ulm high school, where he also graduated in 1823/24. He then studied law in Tübingen from November 1824 and passed his legal examination at the end of March 1828 (at the age of 22). During his student days, Ludwig went on extensive hikes through his Swabian homeland.

In the summer of 1829 Kolb became a trainee lawyer at the court of the Danube District in Ulm. He then worked for six months as a trainee lawyer at the Oehringen Higher Regional Court. This was followed by admission to the Württemberg civil service, initially as an actuary in the Neresheim Oberamt and then finally as head of the district court prison in Rottenburg am Neckar. His official title was that of a “judicial councilor”. He remained in this position until his retirement in November 1871. Kolb then settled with his family in Esslingen and died there on October 24, 1875 at the age of 71.

Ludwig Kolb married the widow Karoline Gauss from Göppingen in 1851 at the age of 45, a daughter of the pastor of Faurndau Johann Friedrich Jung. The couple had a daughter, Klara, who later became known as a landscape painter.

Kolb as a vedute draftsman

Kolb began at a very young age with the occupation through which he became known, namely with the graphic recording of the Wuerttemberg and neighboring foreign regions he had traveled to, Bavarian Swabia and Vorarlberg. Even as a student (between 1823/24 and 1828) he made sketches on his hikes. So from May to August 1828 he hiked the valleys of the Swabian Alb. His favorite objects, which he recorded in drawings, were towns and villages, castles and palaces and individual houses. In contrast, he was much less interested in people. Kolb is clearly a child of romanticism , who was primarily interested in everything "old" integrated in "romantic" landscapes.

His technique was the pencil sketch and pen drawing, occasionally also the watercolor. A few of his views were later lithographed . Mainly his sketchbooks and many individual vedute have survived. The oldest drawings date from 1824, when Kolb was 16 years old. The sketchbooks from 1827 (Volume V), 1828/29 (Volume VII) and 1831–1834 (Volume IX) have survived, whereas four fifths seem to have disappeared. In 1834 his drawing wanderings apparently ended. The last views are from 1844/45.

Many of his individual drawings are now in the holdings of the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart , collection “Plans and Views”, meanwhile fully digitized (see under web links). Sketchbooks are kept at the Ulm City Archives (see under web links) and with individual private families. The inestimable importance of Kolb can be seen in the fact that he was one of the very few artists to be interested in the relatively unspectacular landscapes, villages, small towns and castles of his homeland and thus left posterity with what was often the only historical view of them.
