Louis Maurice Boutet de Monvel (* 1851 in Orléans , Loiret department , † 1913 in Nemours , Seine-et-Marne department ) was a French painter and illustrator .

Life

Boutet de Monvel came from a family of artists; He received his first artistic lessons from his father. He later came to Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts , where he studied with Gustave Boulanger , Alexandre Cabanel , Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre, among others .

From 1874, his teachers enabled him to regularly take part in the major annual exhibitions of the Salon de Paris . In 1900 he was invited to take part in the World's Fair in Paris.

Around 1910, Boutet withdrew to Némours. He died there in 1913 and found his final resting place there.

Besides his teachers, Boutet de Monvel was also influenced by Japonism and the Pre-Raphaelites . He set standards with his book illustrations, and his book "Jeanne d'Arc", published in 1896, in which the story of the Maid of Orléans is told for children, is still considered to be groundbreaking for the illustration of children's books. Together with the famous English children's book illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott , Walter Crane , Kate Greenaway and others, Boutet de Monvel is one of the outstanding illustrators of Art Nouveau.
