Louis Piette (born October 4, 1803 in Commanster, Luxembourg , today: Beho , Belgium ; † June 27, 1862 in Paris , also Maria Ludwig Valentin ) was a Franco-Prussian paper manufacturer, inventor, publisher and book author.

Life

Louis Piette was born in 1803 as the eldest son of paper manufacturer Jean Louis Piette . He studied law in Metz, Strasbourg and Paris and then became a lawyer . As a long-time assistant to his father, he took over the management of the Dillingen paper mill in 1827 . His younger brother Prosper Joseph Maria Piette was responsible there as a technician. After the death of their father in 1833, they both ran the factory. Louis Piette was responsible for the external representation of the company, while his younger brother took over the management.

Both introduced new methods of paper production, such as their own method of sizing, and from 1830 they processed waste paper as a kind of forerunner of recycling . In 1837 they received a Prussian patent for the production of cardboard lids and one year later they invented a rotary kettle, which they sent to the Bryan Donkin & Co company for production because their own funds were insufficient. Another invention was a knot catcher (1848). In Paris they begin the industrial use of paper machines after an introduction to Dillingen failed due to the regulations of the customs . Due to the great success, the family business was converted into a stock corporation in 1844 .

In 1848 the two brothers separated. While Propser Piette went to Bryan Donkin as a technical expert and later set up his own paper mills in Bohemia , Louis Piette went to Arlon . The factory was bought by J. Weidner . Louis Piette helped Baron Constant d'Hoffschmidt of Belgium set up and run a paper mill in Pont d'Oye . However, the business relationship ended in 1857. In the meantime, Piette worked as a publisher of a French specialist journal of the paper industry, the Journal des Fabricants de Papier , on which he concentrated his further efforts. To do this, he moved to Paris, where he worked in an advisory capacity.

Piette fell ill in the winter of 1861/62 and died six months later on June 27, 1862 in Paris.

Journalistic activity

Louis Piette wrote a number of books on the industrial manufacture of paper. Piette wrote his books bilingually, in German and French. In addition, the Journal des Fabricants de Papier was published in 1854 , which he edited until his death in 1864 and which was later continued by his wife. After her death, the journal was continued by Léon Vigreux until 1889 and then merged with the Bulletin des fabricants de papier to form the Bulletin-Journal des fabricants de papier .

family

Louis Piette married Magdalena Helena Klauck on March 7, 1839 , the daughter of Mathias Klauck zu Losheim , the mayor of Losheim . His wife died on December 27, 1864.
