Louis Gustave Fortuné Ratisbonne (born July 29, 1827 in Strasbourg , † September 24, 1900 in Paris ) was a French writer and translator.

Live and act

Ratisbonne came from a wealthy Alsatian family; he was related to the founders of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion , Alphonse and Théodore Ratisbonne .

After attending school in his hometown, Ratisbonne a. a. Studied law at the Collège Henri IV. (Paris). During his studies he got to know the Bertin family, who published the Journal des débats . Between 1853 and 1876 Ratisbonne wrote full-time for this magazine; interrupted only during the war of 1870/71.

Immediately after the end of the war, Ratisbonne was appointed librarian at Fontainebleau Castle and in 1874 he moved to the Senate Library in the same position . In the latter position he became a colleague of François Coppée .

His main work is the translation of the Divine Comedy by Dante . For this achievement he was also awarded by the Académie française .

Alfred de Vigny designated Ratisbonne as his literary administrator in his will. Ratisbonne Vignys published Les destinées (philosophical poems, 1864) and Le journal d'un poète (1867). Alphonse Lemerre included some of Ratisbonne's poems in the later famous anthology Le Parnasse contemporain . From then on, at the latest, he was officially counted among the Parnassians .

Eight weeks after his 73rd birthday, Louis Ratisbonne died on September 24, 1900 in Paris.
