Louis Vezelis
Louis Vezelis (born January 29, 1930 in Rochester , New York, † January 1, 2013 ) was superior of a sedisvakantist community of Franciscans in the United States and bishop in the succession of Pierre Martin Ngô Đình Thục .
As a child of Lithuanian immigrants, Louis Vezelis entered the Lithuanian Vicariate of the Franciscans in 1949 and studied philosophy and theology in the United States and Canada. On June 16, 1956, he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in Montreal by Cardinal Paul-Émile Léger . From 1957 he served 18 years in the East Asia Mission. In 1975 he returned to the USA. In 1978 he was released from his order because he had withdrawn from the jurisdiction of his superiors because he did not want to support the reforms of the Second Vatican Council . For a time he worked with the Society of St. Pius X , but then distanced himself from Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre because of his ordination by Cardinal Achille Liénart , an alleged member of the Freemasons .
On October 4, 1979, Vezelis founded the old ritualistic Franciscan monastery "Our Lady of the Angels" in Rochester . In 1982 he converted to sedevacantism . On August 24, 1982 in Buffalo, NY, he received episcopal ordination from Bishop George Musey, consecrated by Moisés Carmona . Both divided the United States into two of them founded and according to their claims only legitimate dioceses of Catholic traditionalists and ancient ritualists . Vezelis became Bishop of the United States east of the Mississippi. A number of priests, including Robert McKenna , submitted to his jurisdiction. In 1983/84, Archbishop Pierre Martin Ngô Đình Thục († 1984), excommunicated by the Vatican, lived in Vezelis' monastery in Rochester.
Louis Vezelis consecrated two bishops:
- on August 24, 2005 Gilles Butler from his Franciscan community as Bishop of the Western USA,
- on December 12, 2007, the diocesan priest Luis Alberto Madrigal as full professor for Mexico.
