Louis Woollcombe

Louis Charles Stirling Woollcombe CB , MVO , DL ( 1872 - 1951 ) was a Rear Admiral in the Royal Navy .

Life

Woollcombe completed an officer training in the Royal Navy after school and received on January 31, 1893 his promotion to first lieutenant at sea ( sub-lieutenant ). Already on 31 December 1893 his promotion took place on Lieutenant ( Lieutenant ) and on 30 June 1905 Commander ( Commander ). Due to his services as the commander of the HMS Medina , he was promoted to the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) on February 4, 1912 and on February 15, 1912 to the captain of the sea ( Captain ). On July 5, 1913, he succeeded Captain Cecil Fox in command of the light cruiser HMS Boadicea , the eponymous ship of the Boadicea class. In this capacity he was under the 2nd Battleship Squadron ( 2nd Battle Squadron ) under the command of Vice Admiral Sir George Warrender, 7th Baronet .

He then became commander of HMS Chatham , a town-class light cruiser within the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron , before he finally became commander of the battleship HMS `` Malaya '' and as such took part in the Skagerrak Battle in 1916 . On September 15, 1916, he was mentioned in the war report due to his services in the Battle of the Skagerrak ( Mentioned in dispatches ). In addition, he was awarded the Russian Order of Saint Anne, Second Class with Swords, for his service in the Grand Fleet during the Battle of the Skagerrak on June 5, 1917 . For his services as ship commander Woollcombe was on July 31, 1919 Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). On 3 May 1922 he was appointed Rear Admiral ( Rear Admiral promoted). On October 21, 1936 Woollcombe has lived in Mota House in Abbotskerswell and Fawns in Ermington, Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of the County of Devon .

Woollcombe was married to Constance Perry Circuitt and had two sons. His son, John Louis Woollcombe, was a frigate captain in the Royal Navy and married to Elizabeth Anne Townsend, daughter of Admiral Cyril Samuel Townsend . His second son Michael Louis Woollcombe was also a frigate captain in the Royal Navy and the husband of Nancy Turner, the daughter of Vice Admiral Frederick Turner .
