Loupiac (wine region)
The Loupiac wine-growing region is located in the south of the large Entre-Deux-Mers wine-growing region , a part of Bordeaux , and produces exclusively sweet white wines . The appellation covers about 405 hectares and is located in the territory of the municipality of Loupiac . The area with loamy limestone soil borders the large appellation Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and lies on the orographically right bank of the Garonne . Loupiac is opposite the well-known growing areas of Sauternes and Barsac . Since September 11, 1936, the area has enjoyed the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). There is written evidence of viticulture in Loupiac since the 13th century. In 1232, a sale of vineyards in Loupiac was acted in the cadastral registers of the region.
The terms of the appellation apply exclusively to noble sweet white wines (see Botrytis cinerea ) made from the grape varieties Sémillon (average proportion approx. 85%), Sauvignon Blanc (approx. 10%) and Muscadelle . The regulation requires that the must contains at least 221 g of sugar per liter (see also the article must weight ). After fermentation , the minimum alcohol content in the wine must be 13 percent by volume. The harvest restriction is 40 hectoliters / hectare. An average of around 15,000 hectoliters of wine are obtained from the approximately 400 hectares of vineyards. In 2005, 12,927 hectoliters of wine were declared on an area of 364 hectares.
Alongside those from Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, the wines are considered to be the best sweet wines in the Entre-Deux-Mers area. In terms of quality, they do not come close to the wines of the Sauternes , but they are an inexpensive alternative.
The wines can be stored for approx. 7 to 15 years and should be enjoyed at a drinking temperature of 6 to 8 ° C.
