Love Jacked is a 2018 Canadian comedy film directed by Alfons Adetuyi .

Maya returns from South Africa disaffected. She had met Mtumbie on a trip and fell in love with him straight away. Much to the parents' annoyance, she even got engaged to him. But just as she was reporting on her wedding plans, she caught her husband-to-be with another woman. After returning to Canada, she complained to the con artist Malcolm of her suffering. This had just ripped off his partner Tyrell before, because he gave back the money won from a billiards fraud out of a guilty conscience. With the help of Maya, he escapes his pursuer and the two decide to make a common cause. Malcolm is supposed to pretend to be Mtumbie in order to deceive the family.

Malcom then appears at the airport in the best prince from Zamunda style and with a fake African accent. He actually succeeds in deceiving the parents and the extended family, even Uncle Rufus, a relative who is mad about Africa. After all sorts of entanglements and misunderstandings, the wedding preparations are in full swing. After the wedding, Malcolm's death will be faked. Then suddenly Tyrell shows up and wants to participate in the fraud. Malcolm makes it appear. But it has long been clear to him: he has developed feelings for Maya.

After faking death, it doesn't take long for Malcolm to move back to Maya. Before that, there is a showdown with Tyrell, who, however, leaves him alone. The real Mtumbie has appeared in Maya's parents' house and is remorseful. So Maya finally resolves the deception. The family forgives her and takes Malcolm into the family too. Ultimately, Mtumbie also flirts with her lovable cousin Naomi.

The shooting took place in October 2017. The film was produced by Inner City, the production company of director Alfons Adetuyi, with support from OMDC. Parts of the film were shot in Cape Town , South Africa, while the remainder of the film was shot in Hamilton , Ontario .

Love Jacked premiered on February 8, 2018 at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles . There it was named “Best Narrative Film”. It was released in the United States on October 26, 2018. In the country of production, Canada, it was released on December 7, 2018.

At the Canadian Screen Awards , hairdresser Renée Chan was nominated in the "Achievement in Hair" category.

reception

Radheyan Simonpillai of Now described the film as silly, absurd comedy, however, highlighted the performance of actor Shamier Anderson. Chris Knight of the National Post also criticized the film for not picking up its audience.
