Lowtzow (also Lowzow , Loutzow , Louzow , Lewetzow , Lautzan and the like) is the name of an old Mecklenburg noble family with the parent house Levitzow near Teterow . They are not to be confused with the Levetzow family, who also belong to the Mecklenburg nobility, with a parent company of the same name near Wismar.

history

The family first appeared in a document in 1292 with the knight Johannes von Levetzow . The uninterrupted line of trunks begins with Claus von Levetzow (called Ritter von Sturm), who is mentioned in a document in 1388. The family's grave chapel was located in the Levitzow village church , which Joachim von Lowtzow and his wife Margreta von Winterfeld added to the grave chapel and a vestibule in the early 17th century. The Levitzow family estate was owned by the family until 1796.

In the 17th century, the family divided into the lines Levitzow, Teschow (1776-1826) and Rensow , of which the first two became extinct in the 19th century, while the Rensow line again divided into several branches, twigs and houses.

In Einschreibebuch of Dobbertin Abbey there are 18 entries of daughters of the family of Lowtzow 1711-1899 from Rensow, Bergfeld, Teschow, Levitzow, Klaber, Striggow, Lunow and Jürgenstorf for inclusion in the noble Damenstift in Kloster Dobbertin . Auguste Friederike Sophia Theodora von Lowtzow from the house of Klaber, registered under no. 1050, was prioress of the convent in the women's monastery from 1892 until her death on May 20, 1900 . Her grave is located in the Dobbertin monastery cemetery .

Members of the family could be found in Prussia, Schleswig-Holstein, Hesse, Denmark, Norway and the USA and owned several estates, especially in Mecklenburg. a. Rensow (1609–1945 family owned), Klaber (1797–1945 family owned) and Polchow (1893–1933 family owned). Their three manor houses were built by members of the family: Rensow (built by Friedrich von Lowtzow around 1685), Klaber (built by Karl von Lowtzow around 1830) and Polchow (built by Wilhelm von Lowtzow 1906-1908).
