Dobbertin monastery cemetery
The monastery cemetery in Dobbertin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is located on the northern edge of the village, near the federal highway 192 , which leads from Sternberg to Goldberg . Parallel to the almost 200-meter-long cemetery wall with the wrought-iron entrance gate, Lindenstrasse is the only access to the Dobbertin Monastery on Lake Dobbertiner . The monastery cemetery is part of the listed monastery complex in its entirety .
history
After the conversion of the Dobbertine Benedictine monastery into an evangelical aristocratic women's monastery , church burials in the monastery church and in the inner courtyard of the cloister were given up at the beginning of the 18th century.
Already during the evaluations of the geomagnetic and georadar maps created in 2001 in the area of the Dobbertin monastery, the former village cemetery to the north and west of the monastery church and the first monastery cemetery on the inner courtyard in the enclosure were identified. During the archaeological construction supervision in 1998 and 1999, the first body graves were uncovered north of the monastery church and even three to five times the occupancy was found. A row of graves was partly still recognizable and the majority of the skeletons were buried in coffins, as evidenced by the nails found in the humus soil. The cemetery extended around the entire church complex. In preparation for the renovation work, body graves without accessories and coffin burials in brick tombs and barrel vaults were uncovered in the inner courtyard of the enclosure . The cemetery was designed by two rows of graves running in north-south direction. The most recent grave slabs in an east-west direction date from 1725 and 1727. The 1.95 m × 1.05 m large grave slab from 1725 has the following inscription: “HERE: REST: IN: GOTT: DIE: WEILAND: HIGH WELL: BORN : CHRISTINA: VON BÜLOW: FROM THE HOUSE: BRISTOW: BORN: ANNO 1681 SEPTEMBER 15: DIED ANNO 1725 SEPTEMBER 8: "
In the barrel vault , on the oval coffin fitting from 1727, the following inscription could be deciphered: “... in Gott Weyland, venerable virgin ... Sophia Catarina von Bülow was the dominatrix of the noble Dobbertin monastery, was born in 1670 on 19 Martz, died in 1727 on May 11, her age 57 Year and 27 days of which remain in the memory of the sea… ” . She lived 40 years in the Dobbertin Monastery and was the first chosen dominatrix of the Virgins von Bülow .
The new cemetery complex was built in 1780 on the new land outside the monastery near the village. The wife of the master carpenter Schmidt was the first to be buried there on April 7, 1780 by the village's guild of the dead . A little to the south was the building yard of the monastery office, which was also responsible for the maintenance of the monastery cemetery until 1918. Thereafter, until 1933, the state estate administration took over not only the permanent care and maintenance but also all burials up to the ringing of the church bells. When a monastery head died, the mourning bells had to be played for four weeks in the morning and one full hour in the afternoon in all monastery patronage churches.
At the state parliament in Malchin on November 13, 1872, the Kl. Vorsteher reported that the monastic convent pointed out several times that the heavy oak coffins of the deceased conventual women had to be carried the long way from the monastery church to the churchyard, as there were none Hearse would exist. The wish would therefore be expressed to own a hearse with accessories. After taking note of the drawings, the cost estimate and its accessories, namely blankets for two horses, the coat and hat of the sexton and the 12 choirboys, the revision committees discussed in detail with them the request of the senior officers at the conference. The hearse was too expensive and it was to be feared that the blankets, coats, berets, etc., made of wool, would be eaten by the moths if they were only rarely used and would therefore have to be renewed more often. Given the rare exclusive use of the hearse, it would also have to be checked whether the hearse could be rented from the town of Goldberg, which is close to the monastery.
Since February 15, 1877, the monastery cemetery has belonged to the Dobbertiner parish. To the north of the cemetery were the monastery forestry office and the poor house. Due to a lack of space, the first grave sites in the western part were leveled after the Second World War and the brick vaults under the graves, including two of those from Oertzen , were torn down.
Two grave monuments that are under monument protection and are worth preserving have remained to this day .
The large unpolished granite tombstone for the conventual Johanna Agnesa von Gloeden from Roggenhagen who died of a stroke on February 22, 1791 , was donated by the prelate von Arnim from Templin. Von Gloeden lived in Dobbertin Monastery for almost 30 years.
Next to the old linden tree is the plaited sandstone obelisk from 1790. On its four sides , it has medallions in flat relief that hang on ribbons. The inscription reads: “Here rests Hans Friedrich von Krakewitz auf Briggow, eight years provisional and into the 15th year captain zu Dobbertin, née. 1737 d. March 31st in Venz auf Rügen, died in Dobbertin, d. November 11, 1790. - The man, the fatherland, who was useful to friends, is consecrated by this stone as an eternal memorial altar to LJ Freiherr von Meerheimb, Landrath auf Diestelow, Erbm. “ The inscription is hardly legible today.
Another historical gravestone is made of brickwork with cornices and roofing stone and was crowned by a sandstone vase with two iron handles. There is a rectangular recessed area on each of the four sides of the pedestal. Three of these surfaces were plastered with mortar, while a sandstone plaque with an inscription is embedded in the eastern one. All that remains to be deciphered is: the memory of the dear father on the XIII. November MDCCCII (November 13th 1802) consecrated by his Schn… .ERICH .
A little to one side is the large field stone with the plaque with the names of the Dobbertiner brothers who died in honor of our loved ones in the World War 1914-18 for their fatherland and the grave crosses.
Behind it there are 71 tombstones of what were once more than 140 of the deceased conventuals , dominatrixes and provisionalists from 1780 to 1974. Almost all the names of the Mecklenburg landed nobility can be read on the tombstones and crosses. The few wrought iron grave crosses were made by skilled village blacksmiths. All the grave crosses still in existence resemble a chronicle in which independent entries were made that today represent a piece of monastery history.
The grave sites of the nuns are dominated by the wrought-iron cross of the monastery captain Rittmeister Christian Georg Ferdinand von Raven, which is over two meters high . The inscription reads: “Here rest according to the decrees of the Most High! The monastery captain Ferdinand von Raven, heir to Müsselmow and Holzendorf, born. in Boek December 24, 1769, died in Parchim d. May 11, 1831 and his dearly beloved daughter Luise Friederike Julie v. Raven, b. in Wismar September 25, 1805, died in Parchim May 5, 1831. "
As part of an international student work camp in 1997 by Service Civil International from Bonn in the Dobbertin Monastery, the historical gravestones in the monastery cemetery were cleaned for the first time and inscriptions deciphered. The participants came from Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Belgium, Spain and Germany. The cemetery wall could be renovated in 2002 through a special program of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with unemployed young people and in 2007 the Friends of the Dobbertin Monastery had the desolate and weathered marble grave crosses and their granite bases restored and erected.
The grave slab of the master mason Christian Retzloff (born August 3, 1803 in Dobbertin; † September 5, 1874 ibid) was found in 2008 during clearing work in the monastery cemetery. On his wanderings from 1828 to 1858, Retzloff was the leading master mason in the construction of the twin tower complex and the sheathing of the monastery church. His name can also be found next to Georg Adolf Demmler from Schwerin , who was still a master builder at the time , on the memorial plaque on the southern top of the church tower. After the restoration, his grave slab has been on the south side in the tower hall of the monastery church since September 2019.
During the inventory documentation in the monastery cemetery in March / April 2012, two historical grave slabs were uncovered, recovered and placed on the eastern cemetery fence under the lawn in front of the women's graves. The first grave slab belongs to Margaretha Hedewig von Raben ad H. Rederang. She was registered on October 17, 1741 under the number 283 in the Dobbertin monastery. The second plate belongs to Sophie Elenore von Mecklenburg ad H. Validow (* September 5, 1738 - † December 5, 1802)
Other historically valuable gravestones must serve as factual documents of old monastery times since post-war times as a boundary wall of the local waste pit. Among them is the gravestone of Louise von Preen and that of Domina Ernestine Hedwig von Schack ad H. Pankelow. She was the head of the convent in the aristocratic women's monastery for 31 years and died at the age of 85 on June 28, 1906 in Dobbertin. In 2017, following information from a curator, the new pastor Christian Hasenpusch had Domina von Schack's tombstone removed from the boundary wall.
Gravestones of the conventual women were also used for the foundations for building the boat shed on Lake Dobbertiner near the campsite, including von Both (No. 978) and Stenglin (No. 1030). Gravestones and tombstones of conventual women were also used for the terrace construction with the adjacent wall behind the rectory. a. von Preen (No. 736), von Blücher (No. 487) and von Rohr (No. 325).
Burial place directory
In the grave site directory of the Dobbertiner monastery cemetery, conventuals are listed who lived in the convent of the monastery during the time as a noble women's monastery.
