Loyset Liédet (* around 1420 probably in Hesdin ; † after 1484 in Lille ) was a French-Flemish scribe, painter and illuminator .

Life

Loyset Liédet initially worked for the Dukes of Burgundy , Philip the Good and his son Charles the Bold . A two-volume copy of a historical text contains his earliest known work as an illuminator, which the scribe probably recorded in his parents' house in 1454 in Hesdin (France). His early work shows the influence of the French painter and illuminator Simon Marmion , who was employed at the Burgundian court.

Around 1468 Liédet moved to the ducal royal seat and commercial center of Bruges in Flanders , where he became a member of the Schreibergilde in 1469. He worked in the direct vicinity of such well-known artists as Petrus Christ , who had already taken over the workshop of Jan van Eyck in 1441 , and of Hans Memling , who had settled in the city around 1465. Liédet worked particularly closely with the writer and organizer David Aubert .

Liédet's mature style shows bright, almost garish colors and stiff limbs with often heavily shaded surfaces. The characters depicted are referred to as "lanky" or "hacked". In Bruges he worked with David Aubert .

Numerous documents testify to Liédet's career in Bruges, where he received money for miniatures in at least fifteen manuscripts between 1468 and 1472. Liédet dedicated a large part of his work around 1470 to coloring manuscripts for Charles the Bold, within two years he produced over 400 miniatures for him. He was among the last of a generation of Flemish Illuminati who worked almost exclusively on behalf of the members of the Burgundian court instead of producing manuscripts for sale on the open market.
