Luis Roberto Alves dos Santos Gavranić (born May 23, 1967 in Mexico City ) is a retired Mexican football player on the position of the striker . Although he was never the top scorer in the Mexican Primera División , he ranks sixth among the top scorer in the Primera División with 209 goals. Because three of the five better-placed strikers were not Mexicans, he is also the third-best Mexican striker behind Carlos Hermosillo with 294 goals and Jared Borgetti , who has scored 252 times. He is also the most successful goalscorer in the history of Club América .
Luis Roberto Alves is the son of the equally successful goalscorer José Alves , who was under contract with Club America for almost the entire 1960s and won the top scorer of the Mexican league in the 1965/66 season. In memory of his father, who was given the nickname Zague , Luis Zague or Zaguinho was also called.
Life
society
Although he was born in Mexico City while his father was under contract with Club América, he grew up in Brazil , his father's homeland, to which he and his family returned after his engagement in the Mexican capital in 1969. Like his father, who was under contract at SC Corinthians Paulista at the beginning of his professional career , Luis also began his football career in the Timão's youth department .
He received his first professional contract with Club America, for which he played a total of twelve years; and thus four years longer than his father. Although Luis Alves was also under contract with CF Atlante in the second half of his active career and ended his sporting career with Necaxa , he celebrated all his successes exclusively with the Americanistas , with whom he was three times Mexican champion and CONCACAF Champions' Cup - Was the winner.
National team
Alves made his debut in the dress of the Mexican national team on March 29, 1988, when El Salvador was downright outclassed 8-0 and the gifted striker scored twice.
Overall, Alves completed 84 appearances for his home country in the course of his more than 13-year international career, in which he scored a total of 30 goals. His most successful international match was the encounter with Martinique for the CONCACAF Gold Cup on July 11, 1993, when he scored a total of seven goals in the 9-0 victory of the Mexicans and a flawless hat - trick in each half . His last international match took place on November 14, 2001 against Spain (0-1).
The highlight of his international playing career was participation in the soccer world championship in 1994 , in which he played all four Mexican games in full.
