The Lubsza ( German Lubst , Luba or Lubis , Lower Sorbian Lubuša ) is a 66.4 km long right tributary of the Lusatian Neisse in the Polish voivodeship of Lebus and at the same time the largest river in its catchment area. The name Luba comes from the Old Sorbian luba = the friendly .
The Lubsza with a catchment area of 914.1 km² rises with several source rivers at an altitude of 180 m northwest of the village of Olbrachtów ( Albrechtsdorf ) and west of the city of Żary ( Sorau ). After a rough flow direction north, after a third of its course it turns northwest, takes on several tributaries and flows into Gubin opposite the district court of Guben at 46 m above sea level. NN in the Neisse.
The Lubsza flows through pine forests and swampy valleys and through the towns of Jasień ( alleys ), Lubsko ( summer field ) and Gubin. In the past it repeatedly caused floods, for example in 1568, 1689 and 1740. In the 1840s it was partially regulated when the Berlin – Wroclaw railway was built .
Today the Lubsza is heavily polluted by agricultural sewage. This did not change with the construction of a sewage treatment plant in Lubsko, as only part of the wastewater is treated.
