The TRW Automotive Automotive Holdings Corp. ( T hompson R amo W ooldridge) is an American group in the automotive supplier industry with headquarters in Livonia / Michigan . TRW Automotive was listed on the New York Stock Exchange until it was incorporated into ZF Friedrichshafen AG .

History and structure

history

In 1997, the defense, aerospace and electronics group TRW took over the airbag and steering wheel systems division from Magna International and TEMIC Bayern-Chemie Airbag in Aschau am Inn from Daimler-Benz and BDM International. These became TRW Airbag Systems and brought the entry into the field of occupant protection systems. In 1998, TRW was the first automotive supplier to develop a complete occupant restraint system for a series vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. TRW supplied the first two-stage generator for airbags. In 1999, TRW took over the automotive supplier LucasVarity (created from the merger of Lucas Industries and Varity ).

TRW Automotive was formed in 2002 through a spin-off and sale from TRW Inc. , when Northrop Grumman bought the armaments division on December 12, 2002 , while the financial investor Blackstone Group bought the automotive division in 2003 under the company TRW Automotive .

Together with Michelin , TRW founded the EnTire Solution, a 50:50 joint venture for the development of tire pressure monitoring systems ( Tire Pressure Monitoring System , TPMS). On March 5, 2019, the European Commission imposed fines totaling 368,277,000 euros on the Swedish company for automotive safety systems , Autoliv and the US company ZF TRW, which was acquired by the German ZF Friedrichshafen , for a breach of EU antitrust regulations . The Japanese company Takata was fined for having acted as a key witness to inform the Commission of the cartel. The product markets affected were the markets for seat belts , airbags and steering wheels for supplies to the automobile manufacturers BMW and Volkswagen .

In Germany, ZF TRW employs around 10,500 people at 18 locations.
