Luciano (real name Jepther McClymont ; born October 20, 1964 in Davey Town , Manchester Parish ) is a Jamaican roots reggae singer . His stage name is based on the Italian-American gangster Lucky Luciano . He is currently under contract with VP Records . Luciano is the seventh of nine children and grew up in a very spiritual and musical family.

Career

Jepther McClymont was heavily influenced by Stevie Wonder , Frankie Paul and the reggae legend Dennis Brown . While working with Fattis Burell's Xterminator label, he changed his name to Luciano . During this time he also developed his distinctive roots influences. After recording several LPs for Burell , he also recorded a set for Island Records before going independent and starting an independent career. His most important work to date is his album "Jah Words" (released worldwide on April 26, 2005 via RAS Record).

After recording several cover versions for producer Sky High, Luciano released "Give My Love A Try," which was produced at Castro Brown's New Name Studio and was a huge hit in Jamaica. It was there that Luciano met Freddie McGregor, who had previously been the studio's figurehead and who also became internationally known. When he joined McGregor's Big Ship manufacturing company, he began creating a distinctive style of reggae that reflected his religion and social concerns. In 1993 Luciano made it to number 1 in the UK charts with his hit "Shake It Up Tonight".

Luciano won several major awards and was voted "Most Spiritual and Educative Singer" and Mandela 's "Most Cultural Artist". He was even given a plaque by the Jamaican government to honor his work.
