Wendover is a city in the US state of Utah with 1,537 inhabitants ( 2000 census ), located in the western United States on the state border between the states of Nevada and Utah. The Nevada part of the place is the city of West Wendover . From Wendover airport you can reach the military airfield " Salt Lake City Municipal 2" and the international airport Salt Lake City after 93 nm (nautical miles; 172 km) in flight direction east .
The state of Nevada also distributes its gaming revenue to the communities. A few years ago, therefore, the residents of Wendover on both sides of the state border voted to join Nevada: both the western half of the city ( West Wendover , Nevada) and the poorer eastern half (Utah) agreed. However, the motion has not yet been submitted to the US Congress .
In Wendover is the Bonneville Speedway Museum , where the numerous speed records with motor - vehicles are documented in the salt flats of the Salar Great has been made on the 35 km long track.
During the Second World War , this was a training base for B-29 pilots , the Wendover Army Air Base . Among other things, the crew of the Enola Gay was trained there. The aircraft was stationed in Wendover until June 1945. Even Hollywood took notice of the airfield: several scenes of the movie Con Air were named Lerner Airfield on the former USAF turned -place.
