Lucius Cassius Longinus (Consul 107 BC)
Lucius Cassius Longinus († 107 BC ) was a Roman senator of the late republic and in 107 BC Chr. Consul .
Cassius Longinus was the son of a Lucius whose identity is not certain. Nothing is known about the early career of Cassius Longinus. In 111 BC BC he was praetor and in this office he had the task of escorting the Numid king Jugurtha safely from North Africa to Rome , where he conducted peace negotiations with the Roman Empire. Cassius Longinus had persuaded the Numid king to travel to Rome by giving him his word of honor that nothing would happen to him. The tribune Memmius also wanted to summon Jugurtha to the popular assembly in order to obtain statements from him about corrupt Roman senators. However, this did not happen because another tribune vetoed it.
In 107 BC He was elected consul with Gaius Marius . In this position he tried to master the threat to the Roman Empire from the Cimbron Wars and set up camp in the province of Gallia Narbonensis , from where he wanted to fight the Ambrones and Cimbri . However, he fell in the same year battle of Agen , a battle against the people of Tigurini .
