- Consul Gaius Marius assumes supreme command of the Roman troops in Numidia during the Yugurthin War . By converting the Roman army to professional soldiers instead of peasants who were obliged to serve, and by using a more effective cavalry, he achieved a better position in relation to King Jugurtha, who was familiar with the country and its people .
- During the migration of the Cimbri and Teutons , the Helvetic tribes of the Tigurines and Tougener, led by Divico, defeat the Roman legions under the consul Lucius Cassius Longinus Ravilla in the battle of Agen on the Garonne.
