Ludewig III. Graf zu Erbach-Schönberg was the son of Gustav Ernst zu Erbach-Schönberg (1739–1812) and his wife Henriette, née Countess zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1753–1816), the daughter of Christoph Ludwig II. Count von Stolberg-Stolberg . Ludewig married Caroline Countess von Gronsfeld-Diepenbrock (1802-1852) on February 28, 1837 in Meerholz. From this marriage the daughter Marie Countess zu Erbach-Schönberg (1839–1927) emerged, who married Hugo Graf zu Erbach-Fürstenau . Their son, Prince Gustav zu Erbach-Schönberg , became heir to the class rule. After the death of his first wife, he married the sister of his first wife Karoline Wilhelmine * Henriette Friederike Countess von Gronsfeld-Diepenbrock, widow of Ludwig Freiherr von Ellrichshausen.

Life

Ludewig III. Graf zu Erbach-Schönberg initially received home tuition and then embarked on a military career. From 1807 to 1809 he attended the Major Laroche Military Institute in Darmstadt. In 1812 he became a first lieutenant in the first battalion of the Grand Ducal Hessian body guard regiment. During the battle of Wagram he was taken prisoner of war. He fought in the war against Russia and returned in January / February 1813 with severe frostbite. As a result, the right hand had to be amputated in Darmstadt. He fought in October 1813 in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig . In this battle his brother Gustav died from a cannonball next to him and his older brother Emil was wounded.

After the death of his brother Emil in 1828 he inherited the class rule. At the same time he took his leave of the Hessian army as a Grand Ducal Hessian Colonel à la suite. A mandate in the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse was associated with the state rule . Correspondingly, he was a member of the Chamber from 1829-1849 and 1856 until his death.

In 1844 he became Lieutenant General of the Grand Ducal Hesse and on February 17, 1862 he became the 2nd owner of the 1st Grand Ducal Hessian Infantry Regiment. He later became a senior at the Count's House in Erbach. He died on a trip to Italy in Switzerland.
