Ludwig Deurer (1806-1847)

Ludwig Friedrich Deurer (born July 16, 1806 in Mannheim ; † December 30, 1847 there ) was a history painter and post stable master in Mannheim.

origin

His parents were the Augsburg gallery inspector and painter Peter Ferdinand Deurer (1777-1844) and his wife Susette Fröhlich († April 5, 1836).

Life

Ludwig graduated from high school and came to Nuremberg to train as a genre painter. He studied under Klein, but was finished and moved to Munich to study history painting there. He studied under the well-known Nazarenes Peter von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld .

His father had moved to Rome to study the works of Rafael, who brought his son to Rome twice. During that time, Ludwig painted some genre paintings, the best known of which was Crusaders in front of Jerusalem . These pictures were bought by the Grand Duke of Baden. He received the gold medal at an exhibition of these pictures in Karlsruhe.

He probably couldn't make a living from his art alone, and he also supported a relative who was a post office owner in Mannheim. In 1836 Ludwig took over this position. He continued to work as an artist, but since he had little time, only numerous sketches are known from this time .

In 1844 his father died in Rome and Ludwig had to settle the estate there. While commuting between Italian lawyers and the German consulate, he used his time to study the old masters and their techniques. He made numerous nature studies before returning to Germany in 1845. Here he fell ill with scarlet fever in 1847 , from which he died at the end of the year. He was then buried in the Mannheim cemetery.
