Ludwig Grona

Ludwig Grona OSB ( Ludovicus Grona ; born January 29, 1700 in Borchholt ; † August 7, 1765 in Grafschaft Monastery ) was abbot of Grafschaft Monastery.

Life

Grona occurred in 1725 in the monastery and laid a year later, the profession from. In the same year he was ordained a subdeacon . For priests Grona was in 1728 Cologne consecrated. In 1736, as the new master of novices, he was responsible for training the new generation of monasteries. With the assumption of the office of prior , he entered the management of Kloster Grafschaft in 1738. In November 1742 the convent elected him abbot. During the term of office of Grona the construction of the new monastery, which began in 1729, was completed and the monastery was decorated with pictures by the painter Dehne from the Principality of Dillenburg. Grona consecrated the new church on November 5, 1747.

During his term of office, however, the heavy burdens associated with the Seven Years' War also fell . In addition to delivering hay and oats, the monastery had to pay a war contribution of 20,000 thalers . It was often occupied by soldiers and the abbot and brothers hid in the neighboring villages or in the cabbage huts. When the monastery did not pay the 5000 thaler contributions demanded by General Hardenberg from the Electorate of Hanover within 14 days, Grona was deported to Rüthen and only released on bail from a citizen from Brilon . Several times after that he had to hide from soldiers. In 1762 he fled to Cologne, where he stayed until the peace of 1763. In 1765 he wrote the “ Epigrammata chronico-sacra ” about the experiences . Grona was considered to be scientifically educated. The sciences as well as music were cultivated during his time as abbot in Grafschaft monastery. At that time, many teachers of theology and philosophy emerged from the monastery to train the next generation of the order.
