Ludwig Koenen

Ludwig Koenen (born April 5, 1931 in Cologne ) is an American classical philologist and papyrologist of German origin.

Life

Ludwig Koenen studied Classical Philology at the University of Cologne , where he followed up with Reinhold Merkelbach in particular . Through him he was introduced to papyrology and the considerable papyrus collection of the University of Cologne. After receiving his doctorate in 1957, Koenen worked as curator of the Cologne papyrus collection. At the same time he held courses on papyrology, epigraphy and palaeography .

After research stays in Oxford and London , Koenen completed his habilitation in 1969 at the University of Cologne. In 1971 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor. In 1975 he moved to the University of Michigan as an Associate Professor , where he taught until his retirement (2001). In 1989 he was appointed Herbert C. Youtie Professor of Papyrology and in 1995 Distinguished Herbert C. Youtie Professor . For 1996 he was appointed Henry Russell Lecturer . In 2007 he received an Emeritus Fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation .

As a papyrologist, Koenen gained international recognition. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society (since 1991) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1993). In 1993/1994 he was President of the American Philological Association . Since 1985 he has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and since 1998 a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences .

Koenen edited numerous papyrus documents from the papyrus collections in Cologne and Michigan. Since 1967 he has been co-editor of the magazine for papyrology and epigraphy .

His son is the Old Testament scholar Klaus Koenen .
