Ludwig Müller (* 1729 in the Electorate of Hanover ; † 1818 in Itzehoe ) was a German painter and gilder.

Nothing is known about Müller's youth and apprenticeship years, but since it is documented as early as 1760 that he was able to buy a house in Itzehoe , it can be assumed that he could make a living from his handicrafts. In Itzehoe, several gilding work on organs by Ludwig Müller is documented. He designed the Neukirchen altarpiece and, in addition to commissions in churches and chapels, also carried out work in mansions and private houses.

In 1760 there is a collaboration with the organ builder Johann Daniel Busch (son of Johann Dietrich Busch ). They also work together in the St. Marienkirche in Grundhof in fishing to refurbish the organ and redesign the church interior. Müller gilds the organ prospect here and painted the three large galleries of the church with 65 picture panels, which are reminiscent of the medieval poor bibles in structure and shape . The work is completed in 1762.

As was quite common at the time, Ludwig Müller used templates and patterns for his images. Template and pattern books have been published and sold by publishers for painters and artisans since Johannes Gutenberg . The illustrated Bible in the St. Marienkirche in Grundhof is partly based on engravings from the Merian Bible and the Scheuchzerbibel . The use of the Merian Bible and Scheuchzerbibel as a painting template cannot be proven. It is very likely that Ludwig Müller used the "Biblia ectypa" by Christoph Weigel, Augsburg 1695, as a template for the Grundhofer Bilderbibel. If there are at least 10 images, the details are identical.

Since he usually did not sign his pictures, he was only better known in the Itzehoe area.

In 1765 he married Maria Oppel, daughter of a master tailor, in Kiel . Nine children are born, three girls and six boys. One daughter marries, the other children remain single or die before their parents.

Ludwig Müller buys a total of several houses in Itzehoe, in 1777 he becomes a member of the "Reading Society", an exquisite circle around the writer Johann Gottwerth Müller , called Müller von Itzehoe , who is not related to him.

His wife died in 1811, and Ludwig Müller himself at the end of 1818. His death was commemorated by an unusually long entry in the church register and an obituary notice in the newspaper, which was still unusual at the time.
