Ludwig Mandl

Ludwig Lazar Mandl or Lajos Lázár Mandl , later often French Louis Mandl , (* December 1812 in Pest , † July 5, 1881 in Paris ) was a Hungarian-French medic .

Life

Mandl was the son of wealthy parents. After the Jewish elementary school, he graduated from the Piarist high school in Pest . He went to Vienna to study philosophy . To further study philosophy and medicine, he returned to his hometown, to the University of Pest . For the study of mathematics and astronomy , he went to the University of Vienna , among others Andreas von Ettinghausen , and remained there until 1835. 1836 he was on the Pest University with the thesis de sanguine respectu pathologico to Dr. med. PhD . He dedicated this dissertation to his astronomy teacher Joseph Johann von Littrow .

Mandl moved to Paris, initially for further studies. Over the years he has become a successful general practitioner there . He also remained scientifically active during this time. He presented his treatise on the means of discovering pus in blood to the Académie des sciences on February 20, 1837 in French under the title Sur les moyens de decouvrir le pus dans le sang and thus attracted the attention of his colleagues. Just like with his microscopic studies. He was anxious to spread the microscope in the medical sciences. In 1842 he was again awarded a Dr. med. PhD. His Manuel d'Anatomie appliqué à la Physiologie et à la Pathologie was introduced by decree of the Minister of Education in 1843 as a textbook for the Écoles preparatoires de Medecine in France.

Mandl became a member of the Medical Faculty of the University of Paris in 1843 , for which he also manufactured preparations. In 1846 he began his lectures on microscopic anatomy at the Collège de France . In addition, he increasingly dealt with the larynx and the respiratory organs, on which he gave lectures from 1862. As early as 1849 he received French citizenship.

Mandl was a member and honorary member of many scientific societies in Europe. In 1846 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .
