Ludwig Merz (cartographer)

Ludwig Merz (born March 23, 1817 in Herisau ; † July 1, 1881 in Genoa ; resident in Herisau) was a Swiss entrepreneur , councilor and cartographer from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Ludwig Merz was a son of Johann Ludwig Merz and Sophie Müller. In 1846 he married Elisabeth Tanner, daughter of Johann Ulrich Tanner, pharmacist and councilor. After training in his father's trading business, Merz continued this. He was a councilor in Herisau from 1852 to 1857 . From 1859 to 1871 he served as a community judge. From 1863 to 1871 he was president of the municipal court. From 1861 to 1876 he was a member of the Ausserrhoder Grand Council . From 1867 to 1876 he held the office of landlord.

Like his father, Merz worked as a cartographer in addition to trading. He was trained in the latest methods of topographical surveying . In the period from 1833 to 1847 he finished his father's cartographic records by revising them and re- mapping the alpine regions of the Appenzellerland for the Dufour map .
