Ludwig Putz (born August 15, 1866 in Vienna , † 1947 in Munich ) was an Austrian war painter , lithographer , etcher , graphic artist and illustrator .

Life and education

At the age of five Putz came to Munich, where he attended elementary and Latin school. He then became a student of Frithjof Smith and drew mainly from models. When his talent was recognized, Johann Caspar Herterich , Heinz Heim and Ludwig von Löfftz took him under their wing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . The main focus was on the subjects of landscape painting , history painting and genre painting . He also attended the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich. At the age of 24 he was already known as a battle painter.

During the First World War and afterwards he created series of images from various theaters of war. Putz then continued to work in Munich. He was a member of the Association for Original Etching in Munich, joined the Luitpold Group and exhibited his works in German art centers.

In his pictures the landscapes are depicted as intimate landscapes and atmospheric landscapes, which can be assigned to the impressionist genre. Furthermore, his work is strongly influenced by the Löfftz School.

His work The fourth Jägerbataillon at the railway bridge near Bazeilles on August 31, 1870 at the Munich Annual Exhibition in 1888 caused a stir because of its composition and technical implementation. It was finally acquired by Luitpold von Bayern for the royal Pinakothek .
