Career

Ludwig Schwöbel grew up in close contact with his parents' joinery and cabinet makers and therefore gained practical construction experience at an early age. In 1969, the technically very interested graduate in mathematics and science at the grammar school in Michelstadt. From 1969 to 1970 he did military service in the Air Force as a radar flight detector. From 1970 to 1977 he studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt , which he obtained with the academic degree Dipl.-Ing. completed. From 1977 to 1978 he was a research assistant with Günter Behnisch in the department of design, building design and industrial construction. From 1978, Schwöbel was employed by Carlfried Mutschler and partner Joachim Langner as an architect . In 1987 he was accepted as a partner. In 1993 the architecture office was continued with Christine Mäurer. The office has been operating as Schwöbel + Partner since 2006.

The architectural language and the constructive orientation were shaped by the environment around Günter Behnisch. This, in turn, was influenced by Mutschler's freely designed buildings and designs, especially the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule in Mannheim . The change from apprenticeship at Behnisch to construction practice at Mutschler was ideal. The solution of the right angle and free designs appear again in study drafts and later in professional practice in almost all projects and drafts. Due to the technical and scientific background, the buildings and designs are entirely static, constructive and technically independent. Artistic sculptural forms, also in interiors, and the integration of art in buildings are often sought. The claim to create architecture as a holistic total work of art is ideally realized in the new building for the Museum Weltkulturen in Mannheim. Here the facades were developed into a work of art with the painter Erwin Bechtold . The projects were designed and implemented together with the respective partners.

Schwöbel has lived and worked in Mannheim since 1978. Schwöbel is the successor and copyright owner of the architect Carlfried Mutschler, who died in 1999.
