Ludwig Vacatko

Ludwig Vacatko (Ludvík) (born August 19, 1873 in Simmering near Vienna , † November 26, 1956 in Kunvald ) was an Austrian - Czech painter , graphic artist and sculptor of Art Nouveau .

life and career

His parents wanted their son to have a career as an officer. After graduating from military school, Ludwig Vacátko worked as a professor of drawing at the Prague Cadet School. After leaving the army, he devoted himself entirely to the arts, specializing in the anatomy of animals.

He spent study visits to Paris and Vienna.

In 1901 Vacatko studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Professor Sándor Wagner .

In 1905 he took part in the IX. International art exhibition in the Glaspalast in Munich and in 1906 at the XXXIX. Exhibition of the Association of Austrian Visual Artists in the Secession building . In 1907 Vacatko took part in the XXIII. Exhibition of the Hagenbund in the rooms of the Künstlerbund in Vienna.

He gave private lessons to the Czech painter Jindrich Prucha . Luděk Marold chose Vacátka as his assistant in the creation of the Battle of Lipan panorama . In 1915 Vacatko designed the title page for the magazine Jugend . In 1928 he published the book Animal Painting . In 1943 he moved to Kunvald , where he lived until his death in 1956.

The recurring motif in Vacatko's work are horses and naked men.
