Ludwig von Schlieben (born February 20, 1875 in Grossenhain , † March 8, 1957 in Munich ) was a German painter .

Life

Schlieben spent his youth and school years in Hamburg . At the age of 19 he began to study with Johann Peter Theodor Janssen at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . At the age of 22 he entered Fritz von Uhde's painting school in Munich. His first marriage was to the portrait painter Hedwig von Schlieben (born January 7, 1882 in Hagenow; † 1928).

He mainly painted portrait miniatures, portraits of Munich society and atmospheric landscapes.

For many years he was the librarian of the Munich artist community. 200 of his paintings and around 300 studies were lost in a bomb attack on Munich. When the Glass Palace burned in 1931, another part of his works was destroyed.

Schlieben ran a painting school for many years. Fritz Paulus (1947) and his future wife Hedwig Röver were among his students . After his Munich apartment was bombed in 1944, Schlieben lived with his wife on Frauenchiemsee and painted landscape paintings there . He then lived for a few years with his son Ulrich and his family in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm . He spent the last few years in Munich.

Some of his works were exhibited in the exhibition 50 Years of Munich Figure Painting in the Pinakothek and in the Maximilianeum in Munich. His works have been exhibited in exhibitions in Dresden , Vienna and Berlin . They can be found numerous on the auction market .
