Luigi Mattiolo (born October 28, 1957 in Rome ) is an Italian diplomat . He has been the Italian ambassador to Germany since the end of 2018.

Career

On August 1, 1981, he joined the foreign service. From 1981 to 1983 he was employed in the Immigration and Social Affairs Department. From 1983 to 1986 he was second class legation secretary in Moscow . From 1986 to 1988 he was first-class delegation secretary in Bern . From 1988 to 1992 he was first class delegation secretary in Belgrade . From 1992 to 1993 he was a delegation councilor in personnel administration. From 1993 to 1994 he was Deputy Head of the Prime Minister's Diplomatic Staff. From 1995 to 2001 he was a delegation counselor at the EU Commission and was responsible for the common foreign and security policy until 1997 . From 2001 to 2004 he was First Class Counselor at UN Headquarters . From 2004 to 2005 he was the Coordinator for Common Foreign and Security Policy in Rome . From 2005 to 2008 he was Deputy Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Council in Brussels . From September 17, 2008 to August 20, 2012 he was ambassador in Tel Aviv . From August 20, 2012 to March 13, 2015, he headed the EU Commission department in Rome. From March 13, 2015 to November 2018, he was ambassador in Ankara . He then became ambassador-designate in Berlin on November 20, 2018, and was accredited there on December 19, 2018.
