Luigi Meneghello

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luigi Meneghello (born February 16, 1922 in Malo near Vicenza , † June 26, 2007 in Thiene near Vicenza) was an Italian writer . He is considered to be one of the most original representatives of Italian literature in the 20th century.

Life

Luigi Meneghello was an Italian partisan and resistance fighter during World War II . He had lived in Great Britain since 1947 and did not return to Italy until 2000.

Meneghello became known in 1963 with his work "Libera nos a malo". The book with the title of a play on words between "Free us from evil" and "Free us in Malo" is a mixture of novel , essay and sociological study in which he reflects on his childhood in the northern Italian village of Malo near Vicenza. The work is considered by literary critics as one of the most important Italian books of the 20th century.

The autobiographical novel “The Little Masters” from 1964 is, according to the critics, one of the most important descriptions of the Italian resistance and a new beginning after the end of the Second World War. It is one of the few works by the northern Italian that has been translated into German. "The Little Masters" was made into a film in 1998 by the Italian director Daniele Luchetti .

A specific feature of Meneghello's style was the frequent inclusion of English quotations and dialectal elements of his Vicentine homeland in his otherwise highly Italian texts.

In 2007 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize .
