politics

In spring 2005, the candidate of the center-right alliance Casa delle Libertà Giovanni Benussi was elected mayor of Bolzano - with a lead of seven votes over the incumbent Giovanni Salghetti Drioli . In the local council, however, the center-left alliance had a majority, which is why Benussi failed to form a city government. New elections were scheduled for the autumn, Bolzano came under provisional administration. Spagnolli, who is close to the La Margherita group but is not party to any party, was named after negotiations as a candidate for a coalition of L'Unione (with the exception of the communists), the SVP and the UDC . For the first time in its history, the SVP renounced its own mayoral candidate.

On November 6, 2005, Spagnolli was elected as the new mayor of Bolzano in the first ballot with 50.35% of the vote. On May 16, 2010 he was able to prevail again in the first ballot with 52.45% of the vote, this time as a candidate for the Partito Democratico and with the support of the South Tyrolean People's Party, the Greens and several small parties. In 2015 a second ballot was necessary because Spagnolli only got 42.3% of the vote in the first round: In the runoff election, however, he prevailed against Alessandro Urzì with 57.7% . As he was unable to find a stable majority in the city council, he announced his resignation from the office of mayor on September 24 of the same year.

Spagnolli is married and has two children. His grandfather of the same name was one of the founders of the Fercam transport company in 1949 , and his father Gildo headed the Bolzano city nursery for many years.
