Giovanni "Ivan" Benussi (born July 15, 1948 in Bozen ) is an Italian politician, former mayor of Bozen and architect.

biography

The son of the former South Tyrolean member of the state parliament for the Movimento Sociale Italiano Ruggero Benussi worked as an architect after studying at the IUAV in Venice and was involved in various Catholic associations and groups for years .

In 2005 he entered the municipal elections of Bolzano with his own Lista Benussi and was the common candidate of the Italian center-right parties ( Alleanza Nazionale , Forza Italia ) for the office of mayor. On May 8, 2005, his list was able to win two seats in the municipal council, in the mayor's run-off election on May 22, Benussi sat with a lead of seven votes against the incumbent, supported by Italian center-left parties and the South Tyrolean People's Party (SVP) Giovanni Salghetti Drioli . As a result, however, he was unable to find a majority in the local council for his program and the proposed city council, which is why he resigned from the mayor's office on June 22nd and Bolzano had to be administered by an extraordinary commissioner as a result.

When the municipal council elections had to be repeated on November 6, 2005, Lista Benussi was able to win four seats, but this time Benussi had to admit defeat to the candidate of the Italian center-left parties and SVP Luigi Spagnolli , who was already in the first ballot came to 50.36% of the vote.

At the beginning of 2011 there was a scandal when Benussi openly praised the work of fascism in South Tyrol and recommended that the South Tyroleans “lay roses” in front of the Mussolini- Fries at the Bolzano court square .

In 2015, Benussi ran again for the mayoral election of Bolzano, where he secured the support of the neo-fascist movement CasaPound . However, he received only 6.8% of the vote.
