The Luisengymnasium Memel was a secondary school in Memel , East Prussia . It was the northernmost grammar school in the German Empire and was named in honor of Queen Luise of Prussia .

history

Probably already formed during the Reformation , the Latin church school initially had only three, after the Prussian educational reform from 1816 four classes. In 1826 a 5th class was added as a preparatory class. In 1827 the tertia was divided into upper and lower tertia . As a Progymnasium the school did not lead to the Abitur . The Latin class took precedence. Greek was introduced in 1826 and French in 1830. Nevertheless, the higher middle school developed more into a secondary school . Your certificate entitle you to one year voluntary service in the Prussian Army . Of the 95 Prussian citizens' schools, 18 received the right to send their students to the Royal Building Academy in Berlin; among them was the Memel institute.

The school burned down in 1854 and was rebuilt in 1856 next to the still in ruins Johanniskirche on Thomasstrasse. In 1860 the community school was converted into a humanistic boys' grammar school, which was nationalized in the three emperor's year . On April 1, 1891, the new yellow brick building with gym in Töpferstrasse at Neuer Park was occupied. In 1914 the conversion of the grammar school to the Frankfurt system was completed. After the Memel Land was annexed to Lithuania , the Lithuanian language became a compulsory subject in 1924 . Before that, French had been replaced by English as early as 1923 .

The building at Puodžių gatvė 1 is now used as a meeting place for young people, it houses the Klaipėdos jaunimo centras .
