Luiz Eça

Luiz Eça (born April 3, 1936 in Rio de Janeiro ; † May 24, 1992 ) as Luiz Mainzi da Cunha Eça was a Brazilian pianist who played jazz and bossa nova .

Eça, who had been trained as a classical pianist from the age of five, took an interest in jazz in the early 1950s. In the Cantina do César he met Johnny Alf , with whom he and Ed Lincoln formed a trio in 1953, which played in the Plaza , one of the origins of Bossa Nova. In 1955 he recorded Uma Noite no Plaza in a trio with Paulo Ney and Lincoln . In 1958 he studied classical piano in Vienna with Martha Argerich and Friedrich Gulda on a scholarship . On his return he accompanied first Maysa, then Leny Andrade . In 1962 he became known with the Tamba Trio (with Helcio Milito and Bebeto Castilho), which developed into one of the most influential combos in Brazil and also toured North America and Argentina. He also recorded with Paul Winter ( Rio , 1965). His composition The Dolphin , which was also written by u. a. Stan Getz , Bill Evans , Denny Zeitlin or Martin Taylor became the jazz standard .

In 2004 Michel Legrand presented his tribute album Homenagem a Luiz Eça .
