life and work

Hammer's parents are the German conservator Ivo Hammer and the Austrian art historian Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat . His mother is considered a pioneer of feminist art history and comes from a Jewish family from Brno . She was born in Caracas , where her parents found refuge from the Nazi regime's persecution, and grew up in Switzerland. His grandparents, Fritz and Grete Tugendhat, were textile manufacturers and had the Villa Tugendhat built in Brno.

Hammer studied political science with a focus on environmental economics and environmental policy . From 2011 to 2017 he worked as an environmental officer in the Green Parliamentary Club without becoming a party member. In retrospect, he justified this by saying that he saw himself as a research assistant. From August 2017 he worked for Greenpeace Austria, most recently as environmental policy spokesman. He paid his first membership fee to the Greens the day before the state assembly that made him the top candidate. He was able to assert himself against prominent green women like the Federal Councilor Ewa Dziedzic and the former member of the National Council Sigi Maurer , who, however, were able to achieve both list positions behind Hammer.

Hammer declared environmental protection to be the top priority of his political work. It makes a huge difference whether global warming is 1.5 or 2 degrees. He announced that he would propose a socially acceptable CO 2 tax , initially primarily for energy, later also for products. Part of the income should be reimbursed to people in need.

Lukas Hammer is married and has two daughters.
