Sigrid Maurer ( Sigrid V. "Sigi" Maurer; born March 19, 1985 in Rum , Tyrol ) is an Austrian politician ( Die Grünen ) and former student representative ( GRAS ). She has been the chairwoman of the Green Parliamentary Club since January 7, 2020 , of which she has been a member of the National Council since October 23, 2019, as well as from 2013 to 2017.

Life

Maurer studied musicology and political science at the University of Innsbruck (2004–2009), but without a degree. She has been studying sociology at the University of Vienna since 2011 , has a bachelor's degree and, according to her own statements, completed her master’s degree in 2018.

Maurer has been involved in the Austrian Students' Union since 2005 and became a member of the Green & Alternative Students (GRAS). From July 2009 to June 2011 she was the ÖH chairwoman. During this period, the student protests in Austria in 2009/2010  against restrictions on university access, which they supported in their function.

After Maurer had thrown leaflets from the visitor gallery into the plenary chamber of the National Council during the debate on the 2011 budget on December 22, 2010 and chanted slogans, she was banned from entering the Austrian parliament for 18 months.

In November 2012, Sigrid Maurer announced that he wanted to run for The Greens in the 2013 National Council election. At the Green Federal Congress she was elected to sixth place on the federal list. From October 2013 to November 2017 she was a member of the National Council. After participating in a television discussion on sexual harassment on November 6, 2017, she received a myriad of hate mails . She responded with a photo that she published on social media in which she turned against the bullies: "to the haters with love". You could see her with a champagne glass and a raised middle finger. Several right-wing media, including the tabloid Kronen Zeitung, used the photo in a new context, as if Maurer was giving parliament the finger. On the other hand, she sued for damages.

In May 2018, Maurer received obscene messages from the Facebook account of the owner of a craft beer store in Vienna. Maurer made this news public, accusing the business owner of writing the news, and publishing his name and address of the business. The operator of the shop took Adrian Hollaender as a lawyer and sued Sigrid Maurer for violation of personal rights and credit damage for 60,000 euros. The operator stated that he did not write the message himself and that anyone who entered his shop could be the author. Maurer was unable to provide sufficient evidence to support her allegation. On October 9, 2018 Maurer was in the first instance by the Regional Court of Vienna Criminal for defamation guilty. She was sentenced to pay a fine of 3,000 euros and compensation of 4,000 euros. On March 12, 2019, the Vienna Higher Regional Court overturned this judgment. It justified this with the fact that the regional court had overstretched the requirements for proof of truth by Sigrid Maurer. The shopkeeper, on the other hand, cannot rely solely on the theoretical possibility that a stranger used his computer while he briefly left the room. The case must now be negotiated again.

In the 2019 National Council election, she ran for the Vienna Greens in third place in the Vienna electoral district . On October 23, she was one of the 26 members of the Greens in the constituent session of the National Council for the XXVII. Legislative period and elected deputy chairwoman of the parliamentary club of the Greens on October 22, 2019 . After the formation of the Federal Government Short II , she was elected as the Greens' Club Chairwoman on January 7, 2020 in place of Federal Chairman Werner Kogler , who was appointed Government Member and Vice Chancellor.
