Lukasmarkt
The Lukasmarkt in Mayen ( dialect also Lauksmaat ) is a traditional folk festival . It has been held annually in downtown Mayen since 1405. Year after year the market is visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world.
history
In 1405 the name of the Lukasmarkt, which has become traditional and well-known over the centuries, was coined in Mayen. On July 24, 1405, Elector Werner von Falkenstein moved the three annual fairs that had been held on Marian holidays to other dates, and thus the Lukasmarkt to the Sunday after Lukas. The relocation also means that markets were held in Mayen before that. With the award of the town charter in 1291 by King Rudolf von Habsburg , the city Mayen also received market rights. Mayen was already very important as a market town in the Middle Ages . Already at that time, Mayen was a crossroads of several main roads and its pre-Roman millstone industry, a central and given transshipment point for rural handicrafts . The Lukasmarkt today consists of a multitude of areas.
Incidents
In 2004 the Kipp & Sohn free-fall tower had to be closed due to a malfunction on the first day of the match and could not be reopened until the last market day despite the arrival of technicians. Since the free fall was idle for the entire market, considerable costs (energy, personnel) were incurred for the showman.
