Luther. 1917 to the present day is the title of a special exhibitionorganized by the Dalheim Monastery Foundationon the occasion of the 500thanniversary of the Reformation . LWL State Museum for Monastery Culture in the former Dalheim Monastery ( Paderborn district ). The focus of the special exhibition was the view of German societies on the figure of Martin Luther in recent history. The exhibition ran from October 31, 2016 to November 12, 2017 and was under the patronage of Federal President Joachim Gauck . With more than 121,000 visitors during this period, it is the most successful exhibition of the Dalheim Monastery Museum to date.

Luther led on around 800 square meters of exhibition space . 1917 until today through the past 100 years of German history. The exhibition was divided into six thematic units:

Based on the historical person of Martin Luther, she presented the figure of Luther through the ages: as the national hero of the empire or as the so-called “German Luther” whom the National Socialists appropriated for their propaganda, as a “prince servant” or later as the leader of the “first early bourgeois revolution " in the DDR. The final part of the exhibition was devoted to Luther's reception in the present. Exhibition visitors can publish their own theses on a digital wall of theses.

The section "Luther under National Socialism"

Luther . 1917 to date contained around 300 objects, mainly from the 20th and 21st centuries. Their spectrum ranged from high-ranking paintings to documents of contemporary history and everyday objects. More than 120 lenders made the exhibits available.

The section “Life and Work of Martin Luther” showed exhibits from the time of Martin Luther: Among them were exhibits that are said to have belonged to the reformer himself, such as a chasuble from the beginning of the 16th century (lender: Kath. Pfarrkirchenstiftung “St. Alexander and Theodor ”, Ottobeuren) or marbles that were found during excavations at the home of the young Martin Luther in Mansfeld (Lender: State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology - State Museum of Prehistory - Saxony-Anhalt, Halle (Saale)).

Badges, photographs, posters and publications in the “Luther in National Socialism” department document the appropriation of Luther by National Socialism. Also on display were documents by the Lutheran theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer (lender: Berlin State Library - Prussian Cultural Heritage ; main archive of the von Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel ).

A defining exhibit in the “Luther's Role in the GDR” department was Uwe Pfeifer's three-part painting “Table Talk with Luther” (1983/84, lender: Central Custody of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg ). It was created in the context of the Luther anniversary in the GDR in 1983 and was on view in Dalheim until the beginning of May 2017.

Visitors to the exhibition

The department “Luther's Significance in the Federal Republic of Germany” was dominated by the re-evaluation of the figure Martin Luther in church, politics and science, which was made clear by the presentation of contemporary media - including Erwin Iserloh's sensational work “The Theses Did Not Take Place ” (1968).

The “Luther commemoration today” section included a monk's robe worn by the actor Joseph Fiennes in his role as Martin Luther in the film “ Luther ” (Lender: Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum for Film and Television , Theaterkunst Berlin Collection). Also part of this department were works by the graphic artist and painter Otmar Alt (lender: Galerie Chlodwig Selmer, Emsdetten), a Luther figure from Ottmar Hörl's installation " Martin Luther: Here I stand" (Wittenberg, 2010, lender: Schroeter-Wittke), a 1.50 meter high Playmobil Luther figure and numerous Luther souvenirs.

The special exhibition Luther . 1917 until today has been accompanied by a scientific advisory board. It consisted of historians, theologians, church historians and museum professionals. The advisory board included: Rolf Becker, Dieter Beese , Rainer Eckert , Günther Bernd Ginzel , Peter Maser , Harald Meller , Burkhard Neumann, Stefan Rhein, Anja Schöne, Harald Schroeter-Wittke and Ulrich Wolf-Barnett.

Accompanying program

The special exhibition in Dalheim Monastery included an extensive supporting program: themed days and scientific lectures deepened and expanded aspects of the exhibition. The educational museum program for the exhibition offered school classes of all types of schools points of contact in the subjects of German, history, Protestant and Catholic religion. The cultural festival Dalheimer Sommer has thematically connected to the special exhibition. Under the motto “A divine gift - sound and word since Luther”, the festival between July 28 and August 20, 2017 was dedicated to the influences of the Reformation on music and poetry.

Luther's garden

At selected stations in the gardens of the former Dalheim monastery, from June 10 to November 12, 2017, text panels commemorated the private citizen Luther, who ran a large household with his wife Käthe and the garden of the former Wittenberg monastery with fruit trees and vegetable patches became a large one Kitchen garden remodeled.

Playmobil exhibition

Parallel to the large special exhibition, from July 29 to September 10, 2017, the studio exhibition “Martin was here! Luther's Life in Playmobil ”. In it, key stations from the life of the reformer were recreated with Playmobil figures. Among the seven different locations was a 3 × 1.2 meter reconstruction of the Wartburg with Luther's room.
