On March 13, 1786, the historical foundation of today's Sparkasse was laid with the founding of the Graeflich-Lippische Leihekasse zu Detmold . The first commissioner of the loan office was Friedrich Wilhelm Helwing . This makes it one of the oldest existing savings banks in Germany, which is why Sparkasse Detmold was selected as the receiving savings bank in 2012 when it merged with Sparkasse Paderborn. The last merger to date was the merger of Sparkasse Detmold-Paderborn with Stadtsparkasse Blomberg / Lippe on April 1, 2020 . The Sparkasse Paderborn-Detmold became the receiving Sparkasse.
In the summer of 2017, the financial institution came under criticism because it runs a donation account for the right-wing extremist association "Identitarian Movement", which is monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The institute announces the following on its blog:
“The Sparkasse had terminated the account relationship with the Identitarian Movement some time ago and was sentenced by a court to continue the account. Our appeal to the ruling from 2018 was rejected by a decision of the regional court. There are no further legal remedies in this legal dispute. At the request of the Identitarian Movement, the Paderborn District Court issued a preliminary injunction, with which the cancellation of the current accounts by the Sparkasse Paderborn-Detmold will be canceled on October 1st, 2019. "
