The Little Switzerland or Mullerthal region (or sometimes just Müllerthal ') refers to an area in the northeast of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg , which among other Echternach , Berdorf , Grundhof , Consdorf , Befort (fr. Beaufort) and Müllerthal includes (fr. Mullethal).

It owes its name to the sandstone cliffs , which were created by river erosion ( Sauer , Schwarze Ernz ) and are very popular with hiking and climbing enthusiasts. The area is crossed by the Mullerthal Trail , a hiking trail with a total length of 112 km that opens up the rock and stream landscapes in three loops. Luxembourg Switzerland is part of the German-Luxembourg nature park .

The Mullerthal LEADER region comprises the eight municipalities of the canton of Echternach (Echternach, Befort, Berdorf, Bech , Consdorf , Mompach , Rosport , Waldbillig ) and the associated municipalities of Fischbach , Fels , Nommern , Heffingen and Reisdorf .

The population has increased by 50% in the last forty years, in the communities of Befort and Fels even by 76%. 57.7% of the area is used for agriculture, but the number of farms is falling sharply. 38.5% are used for forestry, with the municipalities of Fels with 61.7%, Befort with 53.9%, Fischbach with 52% and Echternach with 47.3% forest at the top. The economic structure is characterized by small and medium-sized enterprises; the city of Echternach alone has an industrial area, and only Echternach, Befort and Fels offer a full range of utilities and services. There are youth hostels in Befort, Fels and Echternach. There are numerous hiking trails, bike paths and picnic areas available to tourists. There are traces of Celtic and Roman settlement, castles in Befort and Fels as well as castles in Fischbach, Meysemburg and Rosport. The major events concentrate on the summer months, such as the international “Classical Music” festival in Echternach, “Art in Beaufort” and “Biennale de Beaufort”. There is a small museum on the former textile industry in Fels. Berdorf has a natural amphitheater in the forest.
