Men's nursery (play)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Männerhort is a comedy by the Icelandic-German writer Kristof Magnusson . The piece was published in 2002 by the authors' publishing house . The world premiere took place on October 19, 2003 at the Schauspiel Bonn .

action

The tabloid play "Männerhort" tells of three men who have set up a hiding place in the boiler room of a shopping center, where they take refuge every Saturday when their wives go on a shopping tour. With canned beer and pizza, Helmut, Eroll and Lars sit on the sofa in the basement, watch football and get excited about their wives, who are in the throes of shopping. They are quickly caught by fireman Mario, who first wants to stop their cellar activity for fire safety reasons until he too learns to appreciate the advantages of the men's hiding place. Nevertheless, the place of retreat threatens to be unexpectedly exposed later.

The dialogues in Männerhort are exchanges of blows that play with words and stereotypes. The masculinity of the characters is exposed in sometimes grotesque exaggerations. Each of the four gentlemen has to secretly carry his package of uncertainty - nothing could be worse than admitting weakness or being labeled a loser - which leads to all sorts of perversions, excuses, white lies and acts of desperation. Magnusson does not shy away from coarse, cheeky humor.

Performances and reception

"Männerhort" was premiered at the Schauspiel Bonn in 2003 and became a cult hit there in a very short time.

The director of the world premiere, Kay Voges , called Männerhort “a loud, young piece”, about the basic constellation of which he commented as follows: “Although in 'Männerhort' there is no woman on stage, they play the invisible leading role because in the In conversations with men, they constantly want to prove to each other how superior they are to women and fail because of their vague notion of masculinity. "

In November 2005 the play also premiered at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin, with Bastian Pastewka , Christoph Maria Herbst , Michael Kessler and Jürgen Tonkel in the leading roles. The production by director Andreas Schmidt saw over 100,000 spectators.

In the newspaper Die Welt , the piece was praised as a “virtuoso, subtle comedy”. The reviewer was enthusiastic about the text and its staging on the Kudamm: “But such a well-built plot doesn't make a great comedy. This is due to Magnusson's virtuoso language skills, which also made his novel debut ( Home ) so sensational. You have to be deaf not to suspect from the very first dialog that someone is writing here who can take on a Woody Allen or Billy Wilder, an Alan Ayckborn, Neil Simon or a Yasmina Reza. His punch line fireworks over the abyss. Magnusson is a rare master in the difficult business of writing black-humored dialogues that are peppered to the point of insolence. A godsend for actors too. And they show the best on the Kudamm. In addition to Pastewka and Herbst, the TV employees Michael Kesseler and Jürgen Tonkel complete the quartet who are suffering from their circumstances. In a vehement and precise clip-clap, the four rather contradicting types stumble through all the comical to tragicomic situations full of thunderstorms of words. "

Like Magnusson's prose, his theater texts cause polarizing reactions. A review on the occasion of the production at the Theater Vorpommern in April 2014 critically sums up the comedy: “A successful piece. Merciless in his clichés and his addiction to punch lines. If you don't laugh here, you think too much. (...) It is a piece that often hurts to read. Not because of relationship box truths, but because of the excellent platitudes of his husband-wife clichés. These men know neither real feelings nor their wives. The latter only appear as set pieces in their stories, and finally the four men’s hoarders recognize: Men have buddies and hobbies, but women have an inner life. Which they deal with while shopping. Of course, there is also a bit of truth in every cliché, which is why the author can dock on various pre-judgments and other judgments with his text. "

"Männerhort" has now been shown at over 80 theaters in Germany and abroad. The piece has been translated into Low German, French, English, Swedish, Turkish, Bulgarian, Estonian, Slovak, Marathi , Czech and Polish , among others .

filming

In October 2014 the film of the same name "Männerhort" was released in German cinemas. The script by Rainer Ewerrien and David Ungureit is based on Kristof Magnusson's play. In addition to Christoph Maria Herbst , who already played the role of the ostentatious executive Lars in the "Männerhort" production at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm, Elyas M'Barek , Detlev Buck and Serkan Cetinkaya are cast in the leading male roles. Unlike the play, in which women only appear in the stories of the four main male characters, the script is expanded to include female roles. Cosma Shiva Hagen plays Eroll's wife Connie.
